How to be a poll watcher in Bartholomew County

Updated: Oct 7

Are you interested in being a poll watcher on election day? The Bartholomew County Republican Central Committee will host a training on Saturday, October 26, to train appointed poll watchers. To become a poll watcher, contact Chairperson Luann Welmer at luannwelmer@icloud.com.

What do poll watchers do?

According to the Indiana Code, poll watchers are entitled to do the following things when voting is taking place:

  • Enter the polls at least 30 minutes before they open and stay until tabulations have been completed.

  • Inspect the paper ballot boxes, ballot card voting system, or electronic voting system before voting begins.

  • Inspect the work being done by any precinct election officer except when an officer is doing password-protected work.

  • Enter, leave, and reenter the polls at any time on election day.

  • Witness the calling and recording of the votes and any other proceedings of the precinct election officers in the performance of official duties.

  • Receive a summary of the vote signed by the precinct election board.

  • Accompany the inspector and the judge in delivering the tabulation and the election returns to the county election board.

  • Be present when the inspector takes a receipt for the tabulation and the election returns delivered to the county election board.

  • Call upon election workers to contact law enforcement.
